Birsa’s arrest and two-year imprisonment strengthened rebel resolve. In December 1899, a revolt broke out against dikus (outsiders). In 1900, Birsa was arrested and died of illness. Many rebels were imprisoned or executed. In 1903, the government abolished compulsory begar and passed the Tenancy Act. In 1908, the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act was passed.
