A party is recognized as a national party if it fulfills any of the following:
- Secures 6% of valid votes in any four or more states in a Lok Sabha or legislative assembly general election, AND wins 4 Lok Sabha seats from any state.
- Wins 2% of Lok Sabha seats in a general election, AND these candidates are elected from three states.
- Is recognized as a state party in four states.
