The UPSC is consulted on and advises on:
- Methods of recruitment to civil services and posts.
- Principles for appointments, promotions, and transfers to civil services and posts, and suitability of candidates.
- All disciplinary matters affecting civil servants under the Government of India.
- Reimbursement of legal expenses incurred by civil servants in defending official acts.
- Claims for pension awards for injuries sustained by civil servants during service, and the amount of such awards.
- Any other matter referred to it by the President.
