The Representation of People Act (1951) lays down:

  1. Found guilty of certain electoral offences or corrupt practices.
  2. Convicted for any offence resulting in imprisonment for two or more years (preventive detention is not a disqualification).
  3. Failed to lodge election expenses account within time.
  4. Has any interest in government contracts, works or services.
  5. Is a director or managing agent or holds an office of profit in a corporation with at least 25% government share.
  6. Dismissed from government service for corruption or disloyalty to the state.
  7. Convicted for promoting enmity between different groups or for bribery.
  8. Punished for preaching and practicing social crimes (untouchability, dowry, sati).
