The Representation of People Act (1951) lays down:

1. For legislative council, an elector for an assembly constituency in the state, and for governor’s nomination, a resident in the state.
2. For legislative assembly, an elector for an assembly constituency in the state.
3. For reserved seats, a member of SC/ST (but can also contest general seats).
